The Path-Cycle Symmetric Function of a Digraph

چکیده
Recently, Stanley [21] has defined a symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph. Independently, Chung and Graham [4] have defined a digraph polynomial called the cover polynomial which is closely related to the chromatic polynomial of a graph (in fact, as we shall see, the cover polynomial of a certain digraph associated to a poset P coincides with the chromatic polynomial of the incomparability graph of P) and also to rook polynomials. The starting point for the present paper is the suggestion in Chung and Graham's paper that the cover polynomial might generalize to a symmetric function in much the same way that the chromatic polynomial does. This is indeed the case, and in this paper we shall study this symmetric function generalization of the cover polynomial. As one would expect, there are a number of generalizations and analogues of known results about the cover polynomial, the rook polynomial, and Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. In addition, however, we will obtain some unexpected dividends, such as a combinatorial reciprocity theorem that answers a question of Chung and Graham and ties together a number of known results that previously seemed unrelated ([2, Theorem 7.3], [19, Chapter 7, Theorem 2], [21, Theorem 4.2], [23, Theorem 3.2]), and a new symmetric function basis that appears to be a natural counterpart of the polynomial basis ( x+n d )n=0, ..., d . One reason for these unexpected results is that this topic lies at the intersection of several branches of combinatorics; their interaction naturally gives rise to new connections and ideas. We shall indicate several directions for further research in this potentially very rich area of study.

Directed cyclic Hamiltonian cycle systems of the complete symmetric digraph
In this paper, we prove that directed cyclic hamiltonian cycle systems of the complete symmetric digraph, K∗ n, exist if and only if n ≡ 2 (mod 4) and n 6= 2p with p prime and α ≥ 1. We also show that directed cyclic hamiltonian cycle systems of the complete symmetric digraph minus a set of n/2 vertex-independent digons, (Kn− I)∗, exist if and only if n ≡ 0 (mod 4).
متن کاملMATHEMATICAL ENGINEERING TECHNICAL REPORTS On Odd-Cycle-Symmetry of Digraphs
A digraph is odd-cycle-symmetric if every arc in any elementary odd directed cycle has the reverse arc. This concept arises in the context of the even factor problems, which generalize the path-matching problems. While the even factor problem is NP-hard in general digraphs, it is solvable in polynomial time for odd-cycle-symmetric digraphs. This paper provides a characterization of odd-cycle-sy...
متن کاملOn automorphisms of digraphs without symmetric cycles
A digraph is a symmetric cycle if it is symmetric and its underlying graph is a cycle. It is proved that if D is an asymmetric digraph not containing a symmetric cycle, then D remains asymmetric after removing some vertex. It is also showed that each digraph D without a symmetric cycle, whose underlying graph is connected, contains a vertex which is a common fixed point of all automorphisms of D.
متن کاملMATHEMATICAL ENGINEERING TECHNICAL REPORTS A Weighted Even Factor Algorithm
An even factor in a digraph is a collection of vertex-disjoint dipaths and even dicycles, which generalizes a path-matching introduced by Cunningham and Geelen (1997). In a restricted class of digraphs, called odd-cycle-symmetric, Pap (2005) presented a combinatorial algorithm to find a maximum even factor. In a certain class of weighted digraphs, called odd-cycle-symmetric, Király and Makai (2...

The symmetric group is generated by σ = (1 2 ··· n) and τ = (1 2). We answer an open problem of Nijenhuis and Wilf by constructing a Hamilton path in the directed Cayley graph for all n, and a Hamilton cycle for odd n. Dedicated to Herb Wilf (1931 – 2012).
